[post_content] => Dr. James “Bill” Tucker began as a full-time professor at HPU in the fall of 2017, but he was already a well-known and respected member of the PSB adjunct faculty prior to this time. The PSB was fortunate that he accepted the full-time position, and everyone was delighted to have this talented teacher join the ranks. It seems that the people who know him cannot say his name without adding, “He’s such a nice guy,” to their sentence!
Dr. Tucker brings to the classroom his academic acumen and achievement, teamed with corporate experience. After earning his Ph.D., he began his finance career with GE Card Services as a risk analyst, performing financial and statistical data analyses utilizing SAS. He produced financial forecasts and loss projections based on economic trends. He next made the logical move into banking with BB&T. He progressed from quantitative analyst, to forecast coordinator, and finally to financial engineer.
While at BB&T, Dr. Tucker managed a financial derivatives modeling team and monitored financial data resources in Reuters and Bloomberg for financial instrument pricing purposes. He also forecasted balance sheet and income sensitivity to interest-rate movements, and developed and implemented stochastic income analysis. This experience that he shares with students is invaluable to their future careers in the corporate finance world.
Dr. Tucker has done research on re-organization versus liquidation decisions for small firms, as well as bankruptcy decisions.
He teaches courses at High Point University in Principles of Finance, as well as Financial Markets and Corporate Strategy in the MBA program.
Dr. Tucker earned his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina at Columbia, his M.B.A. from Wake Forest University, and his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

[post_content] => Wharton MBA Thomas James was named Assistant Professor of the Practice of Finance for the Earl N. Phillips School of Business (PSB) in the fall of 2016. However, he has been sharing his expertise with High Point University business students since 2007 when he started working at HPU as an adjunct instructor in the Evening Degree Program. Since then, HPU students have benefited from his knowledge of the financial markets and corporate world, and now the PSB can finally claim him as one of their full-time faculty members.
Mr. James climbed the corporate finance ladder first working in the food industry, then the pharmaceutical industry, and eventually landing comfortably in the mattress industry. He began his professional career as a financial analyst with General Foods Corporation. This was followed by corporate finance positions of increasing responsibility at Bristol-Myers Squibb where he worked as Director of Financial Analysis and Director of Strategic Planning. Next, he joined Sealy, Inc. as VP of Planning and Development and held other senior management positions including VP of Business Development, and VP of International Administration, Mergers, and Acquisitions.
In 2005, Mr. James struck out on his own with a financial consulting business, while simultaneously working as a senior wealth advisor for Atlanta Capital Group, LLC. Mr. James holds Series 6, 22, 62, 63, and 65 securities licenses, and professional designations of a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) professional, and Certified Investment Management Analyst®(CIMA®) advisor. In 2007, he began as an adjunct instructor at HPU. Teaching part time awakened Mr. James’ desire to impart his knowledge on the next generation of finance students. As a result, he accepted a position as a full-time instructor at Elon University, teaching principles of finance, principles of investments, and MBA managerial finance courses. While there, he also served as the faculty advisor to the local chapter of the Financial Management Association.
At High Point University, Mr. James teaches financial management, corporate finance, and real estate investment analysis, and serves as co-advisor to the Floyd T. Craven Investment Club. He has been appointed as the faculty member to the HPU Retirement Committee.
Mr. James earned his BSBA in Finance and Industrial Management from the University of Richmond and his MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

[post_content] => Dr. Jim Wehrley, Associate Professor of Finance, joined HPU in 1994. He was tapped for leadership roles first as Director of Business Administration, then Chair of the School of Business, and, in 2003, Dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business. After years of service to the PSB, Dr. Wehrley stepped down as Dean to return to the classroom full-time beginning in the fall of 2021.
While Dr. Wehrley primarily teaches finance courses, he also teaches career courses. Whatever the course, Dr. Wehrley’s focus is on “helping students help themselves.” His strong belief is that students have endless opportunities as long as they execute both inside and outside the classroom.
Ultimately, Dr. Wehrley bases his success on the success of students. Helping students become successful is his focus, which guides his priorities.
As a teacher, he has received multiple teaching awards including the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching / Service Award, the Alpha Chi Teaching Award, and the Exemplary Teacher Award presented by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church.
Before pursuing a career in academia, Dr. Wehrley worked in commercial lending and commercial real estate lending at First Florida Bank in Florida and in finance for Standard & Poor’s in Colorado. Dr. Wehrley currently serves on the Board of Directors for Hospice of the Piedmont.
