[post_content] => Dr. Rhonda Butler accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Management at High Point University in the fall of 2018, and was named Director of the MBA Program in the fall of 2019. This was a homecoming of sorts for Dr. Butler because she had taught for the PSB in an adjunct capacity in the Evening Degree Program from 1997 to 2000. It is quite a testament to her that 18 years later people still remembered her as a fine teacher, amiable colleague, and tremendous person. She initially came to HPU with professional experience with the Big Four firm, Price Waterhouse (PwC), and business acumen gained working with other iconic companies. During her time away from HPU, she enhanced her professional and academic credentials by becoming a seasoned business faculty member, administrator, national director of a large non-profit organization, and a PhD.
With a combination of scholarly and corporate experience and a passion for developing leaders, Dr. Butler has earned a reputation as an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and inspiring professor. Prior to rejoining the PSB, she was a full-time management instructor at Elon University. Her teaching engages students, and her teaching philosophy promotes experiential learning, professional partnerships, leader development, ethics and social responsibility, intercultural competence, and global awareness. Dr. Butler also previously served at Bennett College as Assistant Professor of Business and Diversity and the first Executive Director of Entrepreneurship. At Bennett she taught various business courses, created an academic minor, established and directed the Entrepreneurship Institute for Young Women, developed a regional championship-winning Students in Free Enterprise competition team, and led students on business and leadership trips nationally and internationally.
For the Phillips School of Business, Dr. Butler teaches Principles of Management and Organizational Behavior, Leadership, and Work Teams in Organizations. She has taught a myriad of undergraduate and graduate business and management courses over her career. Her interests also include executive leader development, women’s leadership, management diversity, and management consulting.
Dr. Butler is a talented public speaker with several professional and academic affiliations and honors. She presents at conferences and in the community and has served on various boards in the arts, leadership, mental health, faith-based, and non-profit organizations. She is a member of the Academy of Management, Society of Human Resource Management, INROADS Alumni, Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity Alumni, and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, among other organizations.
Dr. Butler earned her Ph.D. in Leadership Studies with a focus on Organizational Leadership and Management from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, her MBA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, her B.A. in Management, as well as a B.A. in Accounting from North Carolina State University, and her Master of Religion with a Counseling and Psychology concentration from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

[post_content] => Assistant Professor of Management Dr. Oliver Stoutner began his HPU career in the fall of 2017. The PSB had been interested in hiring him for years, so his acceptance of the position was a reason for celebration. Dr. Stoutner was an undergraduate major in music who trained to be an opera singer, so like any successful musician he learned early on how to be entrepreneurial, how to manage his time and resources, and how to be highly disciplined. Shifting to the academic field of management for his advanced degrees was a logical progression for him.
Dr. Stoutner’s research interests lie in roles, risk evaluation/behavior, group and team effectiveness, and gamification of work. He is currently working on several research projects that explore historical trends in leadership. The first project looks at the history of the U.S. public radio industry and its leaders’ responses to discontinuous change. Specifically, he is studying how leaders within that industry make sense of the artifacts they have come to know and understand, and how that sense-making may influence their perception of disconfirmatory new information. Another project explores warhorse valuation during the reign of King Edward the First. Edward was involved in military conflicts during much of his reign. Dr. Stoutner is studying how those conflicts may have influenced warhorse supply and valuation. On a more modern level, he is doing research that clarifies the role of gamification (introducing game elements or game design principles in the workplace) in intrinsic motivation.
During his academic career, Dr. Stoutner has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels teaching Business Ethics and Leadership Development; Leadership, Management, and Organizational Behavior; Introduction to HR Management; Organizational Development and Change; HR Management; and Positive Group and Organizational Development. At HPU he teaches Principles of Management and Organizational Behavior and an MBA course in Global Leadership.
As a teacher, Dr. Stoutner says that he strives to be the kind of professor who challenges students and has a sense of humor, someone who provides a positive and safe classroom space for exploration and learning. He endeavors to be rigorous but fair, creative but purposeful. His motivation is to help foster a classroom environment filled with collaborative learning, where students are willing to share and emboldened to take risks.
Dr. Stoutner earned his B.A. in Music from the University of Iowa, his MBA from the University of Alabama at Huntsville, and his Ph.D. in Management from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
